The News Comma

Newspaper headlines drive me nuts almost daily. Sometimes they leave out articles (e.g., a and the), sometimes they just talk like cavemen (e.g., Mobster Dead), but they always misuse the comma. This problem is almost universal; apparently, all journalists think that the comma is a suitable replacement for the word and.
Thankfully, more people seem to be talking, dying, and robbing by themselves than before, but whenever one might expect “and,” a comma is used.
